Imagist Poetry

Conventions: Imagist poems seek to form a powerful images through written language. Thoughtful, precise word choice are not intended to decorate the piece but rather be straightforward and honest. Imagist poems do not have larger universal truths or messages. Instead, they intend to create a visual atmosphere through words. The title of these pieces directly describe the content, and the lines have a musical flow but do not have a metronome.

Contortionists in a Metal Cage

Crooked limbs packed

Cheek to cheek

body to metal

Cage wires only leak

fingertips and curls of hair

Lashes flap

against fluorescent blue

Red heart lips don’t break in two

A crowd roars

at the caged animals

Boy and Masked Creature

A young boy sits

Shoulders hunched

Staring at

The multi headed creature

White expressionless masks

Emerge from

Fabric wrapped body

Staring back
